It is important to realize that the Spanish, while exploring the Southwest, also continued to settle in Florida—many years before the English arrived. In fact, in 1573, even before Santa Fé was founded, Jesuit missionaries began to open missions in Florida. They also had missions in Georgia (Guale), South Carolina (Orista), and Alabama. All these missions struggled to exist for about 200 years. First they struggled with the Indians, and then they were often attacked by the English—pirates! About 1760 the Spanish finally gave up.
