But, Cortés did not give up. He built boats to return to the island, and finally on August 13, 1521, he took the city. The Aztec empire was no more. Cortés’s home in Mexico City is still there and you can visit it, but the great Aztec temples and buildings were all destroyed. But, archaeologists are always discovering things in Mexico City that go back to Aztec times. Cortés later left Mexico and went back to Spain. In 1541 he fought the Arabs in Algiers, Algeria, and lost most of his wealth. He died in Spain in 1547 in Sevilla, Spain.
