The following poem is from the Deseret 2nd Primer (printed 1868), and I have transliterated it into Latin script below. Below the Latin script, I have made an image with the original Deseret characters and some added graphics. I found the poem charming, but there was no author mentioned.

The lark is up to meet the sun,
The bee is on the wing,
The ant his labor has begun,
The groves with music ring.

And shall I sleep when beams of morn
Their light and glory shed?
For thinking beings were not born
To waste their time in bed.

Shall birds, and bees, and ants be wise,
While my time thus waste?
O let me with the morning rise,
And to my duty haste.

wake up

   DESERET ALPHABET E-BOOKS

There were 3 primers that were used in "Deseret" (Utah territory) to teach the alphabet to children and those adults who were trying to learn English, or who just wished to learn the alphabet. I am placing on the internet 2 ebooks (.epub and .pdf versions) of the 1st and 2nd Deseret primers (with illustrations). There are 3 versions in the ebooks: Each lesson in Deseret followed by Latin script, all lessons in Deseret only, and all lessons in Latin script only.  You can download the ebooks here.
